About Nathdwara City
Nathdwara is a town in Rajasthan state of western India. It is located in the Aravalli hills, on the banks of the Banas River in Rajsamand District, 48 kilometers north-east of Udaipur. This town is famous for its temple of Krishna which houses the idol of Shrinathji, a 14th-century, 7-year-old “infant” incarnation of Krishna. The idol was originally worshipped at JATIPURAMathura and was shifted in 1672 from Govardhan hill, near Mathura along holy river Yamuna after being retained at Agra for almost six months, in order to protect it from anti-Hindu fanatic iconoclastic Islamic policies of Mughal ruler Aurangzeb’s. Literally, Nathdwara means ‘Gateway to Shrinathji’. Nathdwara is a significant Vaishnavite shrine pertaining to the Pushti Marg or the Vallabh Sampradaya or the Shuddha Advaita founded by Vallabha Acharya, revered mainly by people of Gujarat and Rajasthan, among others. Vitthal Nathji, son of Vallabhacharya institutionalized the worship of Shrinathji at Nathdwara. Nathdwara town itself is popularly referred to as ‘Shrinathji’, after the presiding deity.

The King of the region, Shri Udaya Singh, came for his darshan and presented him with one hundred gold coins. Shri Gusainji blessed him with one of his shawls. After the king accepted it, he bowed to Shri Gusainji and returned to his palace. Later his queen came. She was the daughter of the princess Mirabai. After playing the board game Chopper with her, Shrinathji would return to the Govardhan Hill. One day Ajaba requested, “ In your Comings and Goings to Mevar from the Govardhan hill, You are very troubled. Live here on Mevar, then I can always see You.” Shrinathji replied, “As long as Shri Gusainji remains on the earth, I Will not leave the Govardhan Hill. Afterward, I will Definitely come to mevar and will stay here for many years. Then, when Shri Gusainji again appears in his lineage, I will return to Braja and will play at the Goverdhan Hill for many years.” Saying that Shrinathji returned to the Goverthan Hill. Many years later, Shrinathji remembered that He was supposed to move to Mevar to Mevar and thought, “I Must go to Mevar. But Shri Mahaprabhuji has established My temple on the Goverthan Hill, so the lineage holders will only agree to the move Mevar.” And hence he forced Aurangzeb to attack the temple and him then with Navneetpriyaji & all balaks left for Mevar which is now called Nathdwara.
